DESIGNER HOUSES – NEW CONSTRUCTION

Our new construction project is coming along. I don’t know what it is, but sometimes (to our electrician’s chagrin!), I just have to get up on that ladder. It has been a fun project. I will be excited when we get this beautiful place shot.

It took a little thought and finesse to get the pattern just the way we wanted it with the lights. Each little ball comes spaced on the canopy but the length was adjustable so we were able to do a specific random pattern. It’s those little details that makes a world of difference.

DESIGNER HOUSES – LIGHTING PLACEMENT TIP

When you are deciding on the placement of the light fixture look at the distance from the light to each component in the room (in this case the stair well) such as walls, other furniture, ceiling, floor, table tops, etc. Don’t just automatically think that centering is the best option. Think less about centering and more about creating a composition between all the items mentioned to make the best look. There are many times when I place items way off center to make them look more balanced….some times you have to center on the optical illusion rather than the actual room to get the best balanced look.

FENG SHUI TIP FOR STAIR DESIGN

Although I love the look of open rafters on stairs, it isn’t good feng shui because it doesn’t ground the Qi or create a stable environment to walk on. I put the stair in this case to the left of the front door to pull the energy into the correct pattern (clock wise) which sets the tone for the overall feel of the space. I will also be minded to placing art in the stair well at our next design phase which will control the way the Qi moves up and down the stair.
